Tesla occupies a changing place in Europe because the market for electric vehicles in the region expands. In March, people registered 240 891 battery electric vehicles according to JATO Dynamics. It is the second largest monthly total in the records. By this measure battery electric vehicles are 16.9% of all new cars. And the total amount is 23 % higher than the previous year.
But the results for Tesla are less consistent - JATO reported that people registered 30 % fewer Tesla cars in March - this reduction is smaller than the drops that occurred earlier in the year. To explain this the company deals with the transition of the Model Y and faces many other companies that sell similar products. There are also changes in how the general market functions.
Then again data shows that the situation is becoming steady - as Roland Pircher observed, the number of cars that Tesla sells in Europe is higher over the last four periods of three months. In the first three months of 2026, the portion of the market that Tesla holds is 2.23%. If this continues, it indicates that the company does not grow at the same rate as the general electric vehicle market. It is possible that the company is reaching a state where its sales are consistent.
The chart shows this process - for the whole region, the use of battery electric vehicles moves toward a higher level. When we look at Tesla, the sales change often but show a return to previous levels recently - this difference is evidence that more companies are competing for customers. It is not evidence that individuals have stopped wanting to buy Tesla cars.
Tesla is a significant participant in the region - to support this, JATO data shows that the Model 3 & Model Y are frequently among the electric vehicles that people buy the most - this is true even when the total number of cars sold changes.
For the current time, the situation in Europe is not about a decrease in the number of people who want electric vehicles. It is about how the market is divided among different companies. Tesla is active in a market that is growing at a fast rate. And this market contains a larger number of competing brands than before.
