The European Union and Jordan signed financing agreements worth €135 million in Amman, expanding cooperation at a time of rising economic and geopolitical pressure across the Middle East.
The agreements were signed by European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica as part of the EU’s broader strategic partnership with Jordan.
According to the European Commission, the deal is aimed at accelerating economic resilience, modernization, and long-term development projects in the country.
EU and Jordan step up delivery of their strategic partnership through €135 million financing agreements.
The package comes after the EU previously announced a much larger €3 billion partnership framework for Jordan covering the 2025–2027 period. The bloc increasingly views Jordan as one of its most important and stable regional partners amid ongoing instability across the Middle East.
For Jordan, the funding provides critical external support as the country faces high debt levels, infrastructure pressure, and the long-term economic impact of regional conflicts and refugee flows.
Water security and infrastructure investment remain among Jordan’s biggest structural challenges. The country is considered one of the most water-scarce nations globally, forcing continued investment into water transport, modernization, and climate-related projects.
The agreement also reflects the EU’s broader geopolitical strategy. Brussels has been using financing and infrastructure partnerships to strengthen influence in neighboring regions while supporting economic stability and reducing migration and security risks.
The timing is important as regional economies continue navigating elevated borrowing costs, slower global growth, and geopolitical uncertainty.
European officials have repeatedly described Jordan as a key strategic ally for the region.
Jordan is a reliable and credible partner.
While €135 million alone will not transform Jordan’s economy, the agreement strengthens the country’s access to international financing and signals continued EU commitment to long-term economic and political cooperation.
